43rd Airlift Wing

This week’s article explains how the various airfield operations and base support functions being performed by the 43rd Airlift Wing are affected by the BRAC actions. The Joint Installation Transfer Conference held this week ironed out many of the details. The current plan, as it now stands is:

The Department of the Army will take over the following functions, providing service to Pope Army Air Field:
  • Crash, Fire and Rescue
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Contracting
  • In-flight meals
  • Aircrew transportation
  • Services Morale, Welfare and Recreation
  • Law Enforcement
  • Airfield/Flightline Security
  • Customs Inspections
  • Real Property Sustainment, Restoration and Modernization to include the airfield runway, taxiways and aircraft parking ramps
  • Dependant/Retiree medical care
  • Telephone service
  • Information Technology backbone communications support
The 440th Airlift Wing will be responsible for the following:
  • Operational Direction of active duty associate squadrons – the 2nd Airlift Squadron and 43rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron – 440th AW has OPDIR
  • Flight planning
  • Weather
  • Airfield management
  • Air Traffic Control tower operations
  • Navigational Aids and weather systems maintenance
  • IT support for wall jack to PC, network administration and help desk type functions: via Air Force Enterprise Service Desk
  • Small arms training

The 43rd Air Group will perform the following functions:
  • En Route support, including command and control, aerial port, aircraft maintenance, joint airlift cargo inspections and range scheduling for AMC/TACC directed airlift missions.
  • Supply for aircraft parts
  • Packing, crating, shipping (Transportation Movement Office) - not household goods
  • Fuels
  • Active duty medical and dental support
  • Administrative control of active duty associate squadrons
  • Military personnel support
  • Finance support
  • Legal support
  • Chaplain support
